Welcome to the new Penguin blog. As part of our push into the 21st century, a commissioning editor has been nominated to be the voice (or fingers) of Penguin on the World Wide Web. And that editor is me (for now, at least). We’ll hopefully be covering all the joys of the publishing process on this site, including signing up new authors, publishing their books, and all the adventures in between. Please feel free to comment on this site with any questions you might have - Penguin wants to open up this world to anyone, to give everyone a little flavour of what’s behind the books. I’ll be your guide here - not quite sure for how long, but we’ll see… So, what’s on my desk at the moment? Finished copies of Special Topics in Calamity Physics have just arrived, which is the buzz book of the Autumn. We pre-empted* everyone else in the UK and snapped it up early, and we have the most amazing jacket for it. See it here (if I can work this correctly), and visit the incredible American site for the book here. *publishing lingo. It just means we grabbed it before anyone else had a chance. Venetia Butterfield
Hmmm. Promotion as blog, bog as promotion? We'll see.

There is something very appropriate about welcoming you to our world. I recall as a seven year old how Penguin opening up a whole new vista.
If you are ever in the vicinity of Irish blogosphere there are some very very fine writers.

Hello Miss Butterfield,
Your links work just fine! I'm excited to see that Penguin has a blog. Ever since I started buying books I've always seen the Penguin logo on my shelves (some Kerouac, DeLillo, Mark Bowden, others).
Anyway, I look forward to reading the blog and seeing what's going at Penguin.
Have a great day!

Welcome to the blogosphere, Venetia. I'm glad I followed your link to the book. I was afraid that this title you were all excited about, Special Topics in Calamity Physics, was non-fiction!

Welcome! No need to be nervous. Book lovers are a courteous lot and this idea for a blog, one that gives readers a look at how things are organized behind the scenes, is a terrific one. Good luck with this project and looking forward to your posts, BlogLily

This is my first foray into blogland, am intrigued to read what happens there. Does this now mean that the penguin staff will get a number one hit with a chav inspired single??
Lovely to get the latest info about books from penguin staff.

Hi Venetia, look forward to hearing all the ins and outs of publishing at Penguin. I think that bloggers are very appreciative of what you're doing and will keep their eyes peeled. I don't know about other bloggers, but I always visit my favourite blogs every day to check up. And I think that the best blogs are updated at least every couple of days.

This is a good idea, looking forward to what is posted. I hope among the topics you cover will be to talk a little more about the new Penguin Praise program.

Greetings from South Africa! "Get closer to Penguin", indeed. This is such a brilliant idea. I'm a huge Penguin fan and cannot wait to get Special Topics in Calamity Physics into the bookshop where I work. Will be checking in on the blog regularly!
