I think there's an element in this of the still-extant novelty factor of much online stuff. Because we think it's 'cool' or modern to be involved with all these things - and because often they're genuinely useful to us - we tend to overlook the aspects of it that we don't like.

It's a little like the satirical Onion story from Our Dumb Century, about the first newspaper adverts - being sold as a service to readers, informing them of products that are of interest to them. Of course now, decades later, nobody sees ads as anything other than a necessary evil, a nuisance to sit through. Right now, Amazon are doing precisely the same thing with a straight face - selling a Kindle with ads, or as Amazon calls it, "Kindle with Special Offers." They actually try to suggest that these are things readers won't want to miss out on! And of course, they'll be tailored to your interests. If anyone is fooled by this now, they won't be for long. So I expect much more rebellion against the infiltration of these services into our lives, helped (I hope) by books such as this one.
